ActiveCampaign Email Marketing review: pricing, automations and AMS connections for agents

By the IAT editorial team | Updated October 4, 2026

ActiveCampaign runs newsletters and multi-step email automations, including ones that start days before a birthday or renewal date. Contacts arrive by file import, forms, the API (a link your developer can program) or Zapier, which is also how EZLynx connects.

It fits an agency that wants detailed automations and writes its own copy. Plus is where most agencies should start.

Our take

ActiveCampaign is a general automation tool with no insurance content of its own. Its date-based trigger starts at a set hour in each client's time zone.

Plus is the plan to buy, since Starter caps each automation at five actions and leaves out texting. Pro only pays off once you want richer segments or to see which emails led to a sale.

The catch for agencies is data. Renewal dates live in custom fields you load and keep current yourself, because no AMS connects directly.

Pros

  • Date triggers can fire days before a renewal, at a set hour
  • Automations can start when a client replies
  • One-click unsubscribe header on every kind of email
  • Configure Domain sets up your DNS records for you
  • No setup fee and a 14-day trial with no card

Cons

  • No insurance content or compliance review
  • EZLynx is the only AMS, and only through Zapier
  • New accounts pay for unsubscribed and bounced contacts
  • Starter caps automations at five actions
  • Data can't be restored after you cancel

What counts as a contact

Each person counts once, even on several lists. On accounts opened from November 3, 2025, unsubscribed and bounced contacts count too.

Good to know before you buy

  • No setup fee.
  • At your contact limit, campaigns stop sending unless you turn on auto-upgrade, which moves you to the next tier at once.
  • Hitting the monthly send limit stops all email until the next calendar month.
  • Extra users cost $15 a month on Plus and $30 on Pro.
  • A dedicated IP address costs $750 and needs 100,000 engaged contacts.

Corrections

Vendors change their pricing all the time and they don't email us when they do. So if you see a price on here that's gone up, a plan ActiveCampaign Email Marketing quit selling or a contract term that reads different now, let us know and send the link to the page where ActiveCampaign Email Marketing has it. Somebody here pulls up that page and checks it before we change anything on ours.
