Questions to ask before you buy
What is contingency search?
You pay the firm only if you hire someone it sent you. Nothing is due up front, so trying one costs you nothing.
What is retained or engaged search?
You pay part of the fee when the search starts and the rest later, often when the hire starts. In return the firm commits to your search.
How is a placement fee figured?
Usually as a percent of the new hire's first-year pay. Ask whether bonuses and producer commissions count toward that pay, since they raise the bill.
What is a guarantee period?
The time after the start date when the firm replaces a hire who leaves or refunds part of the fee. Get the length, the remedy and what voids it in writing.
Can I hire a temp full time?
Most staffing firms allow it. Some charge a conversion fee unless the temp has worked a set number of hours, so get that number first.
What about a producer's book and non-compete?
A producer's current agreement may limit which clients can follow them. Have your attorney read it before you make an offer.
Will the firm recruit my staff later?
Ask for an off-limits promise, a period when the firm won't recruit your people. Few firms publish one.
Frequently asked questions
What does an insurance recruiting firm do?
An insurance recruiting firm finds and screens candidates for agencies, brokerages and carriers, such as producers, account managers, CSRs and underwriters. Some also supply temps.
How much do recruiting firms cost?
Two of the 16 recruiting firms on this page publish prices: EZ Recruiting & Consulting and Evergreen Agency Talent. Most recruiters set their fee in a proposal. The cost guide has every published price.
How is this list ordered?
We start from a default order built on trust factors, which are how many buyer facts the vendor publishes, whether its identity is verified, how openly it shows prices, how long it has been in business and an editorial review. Affiliate and paid links play no part, and a higher spot does not mean a better product. Read how we order vendors.
How we researched this. We based this page on each vendor's published pricing where available, terms and product pages, reviewed in October 2026, together with our team's experience working with insurance agents and agency owners since 2008.
