Products and getting started
SmartFinancial
- Sign up on the agent site and fund the account with a deposit. SmartFinancial picks the amount and you can't get it back.
- Build a profile for each product. Pick states or area codes, add filters and set calls or leads per day, call hours, how many calls can ring at once and the number transfers go to. There are also account-wide maximums for leads and calls.
- SmartFinancial suggests a bid for each product, and you raise it if you want more volume in a competitive area.
- Leads land in the SmartFinancial dashboard and can also go out by email or text, or to your CRM, rater or dialer.
- Once your balance falls to $50, your card is charged the rebill amount you chose in the portal.
- Your account manager handles 40 to 50 clients and goes over your account with you every two weeks.
- A pause lasts at most 14 days, and then the account turns itself back on.
MediaAlpha
- As an independent agent, open an account and deposit at least $250. The deposit becomes lead credit.
- Set up your profile with state, ZIP codes and radius, shopper types, vehicle counts, coverage and driving history, a delivery schedule, a daily cap and your bid.
- Leads arrive in your account and by email, with optional text alerts or a post to your lead management system.
- Turn on auto-refill so your account tops up when the balance falls below the account minimum.
Price and cost to start
Bidding sits at the center of both, though MediaAlpha also lets you skip the auction and buy leads at a fixed price. SmartFinancial suggests a bid and cites typical web lead costs of $8 to $30, while MediaAlpha publishes no general price guide. The deposits differ too, since MediaAlpha's $250 is refundable lead credit but SmartFinancial sets a non-refundable amount and adds 2.95% to card payments.

Shared or exclusive
A shared SmartFinancial lead reaches at most three agents against MediaAlpha's ceiling of four, and both stop a second agent from the same carrier buying that shopper. Their exclusive web leads overlap on auto and home. Past that, SmartFinancial adds exclusive health leads and live transfers, while MediaAlpha adds exclusive life leads.
Every offer: SmartFinancial and MediaAlpha.
Lead returns
MediaAlpha's 7-day window is the tighter one, since SmartFinancial allows 10 days, and only MediaAlpha publishes a cap of 20% of your leads each month. Both pay in account credit rather than cash and both make you delete a returned lead. SmartFinancial accepts a wider set of reasons, such as a language barrier or a lead outside your territory, but it may audit accounts that return a lot.
Full return terms: SmartFinancial and MediaAlpha.
Contract and cancellation
Neither has a set term, but only MediaAlpha refunds an unused balance when you close, while SmartFinancial lets you spend what's left on its products and gives no cash back. Leaving SmartFinancial takes written notice and as long as 15 business days, and its pauses end after 14 days. Both start a monthly inactivity charge after 90 days, though only MediaAlpha publishes the amount.
Full contract terms: SmartFinancial and MediaAlpha.
Delivery and integrations
For both, delivery happens when the lead shows up in your account, and either can forward it by email, text or CRM. SmartFinancial adds rater and dialer connections and will build a custom API link, though posting to your CRM means granting it access. MediaAlpha asks you to make contact within 48 hours.
Delivery details: SmartFinancial and MediaAlpha.
Lead quality checks
SmartFinancial gets the bulk of its shoppers through SmartFinancial.com, runs contact details through xVerify and RealValidation and requires affiliates to hold consent records for five years. MediaAlpha uses Jornaya and TrustedForm to document consent but says outright that it doesn't check shoppers or promise the consent meets the TCPA. If you dial heavily, MediaAlpha leaves more of that checking to you.
Lead sources and consent: SmartFinancial and MediaAlpha.
