Bass Underwriters review for retail agents: programs, access and binding authority
Bass Underwriters places commercial, personal and specialty surplus lines business for retail agencies from Florida and branches across the country. Its underwriters shop the account and return a quote or indication. Surplus lines, also called E&S, means carriers not licensed in your state that step in when admitted carriers say no.
It suits agencies with coastal homes, habitational risks and specialty classes. You sign the producer agreement online and can ask for quotes before the appointment is approved.
- Best for
- Agencies placing hard-to-place commercial, coastal homes and specialty E&S risks that want to quote before they are appointed
- Type
- Wholesale broker. Bass calls itself an MGA, but no program shows binding authority of its own
- Lines
- Commercial P&C, homeowners and high-value homes, flood, professional, marine and transportation
- Access
- Online producer agreement. $1 million E&O. You can quote while the appointment is pending
- Authority
- Quotes and indications in 24 to 48 hours. Binding needs an approved appointment and the carrier's OK
- States
- Personal and specialty lines nationwide
Our take
Bass is a privately owned Florida wholesaler that works with more than 300 carriers. It writes the risks retail agents struggle with most, such as coastal homes, bars and restaurants, habitational schedules and more than 75 professional classes.
It fits an agency that wants an answer before signing up. You can ask for quotes while the appointment is pending, and the agreement says you own the expirations on everything you place.
The billing terms are strict. You pay 25% plus fees and taxes at binding, and the rest by the 10th of the next month whether or not the insured pays.

Quote and bind authority
"Takes your submission" means you send the risk to the firm, and "Underwrites" means its own staff set the terms. "In house" under Binds means the firm can commit the carrier without asking first. A blank cell means the firm hasn't published that step.

Frequently asked questions
Can I get a Bass quote before I'm appointed?
Yes. You can ask for quotes while the appointment is pending, but you can't bind until Bass approves it.
Does Bass bind coverage itself?
No program shows binding authority of its own. Bass binds once the carrier agrees and your appointment is approved.
Who pays the surplus lines taxes?
The insured pays them, and you send the taxes and fees to Bass with the premium. Bass publishes nothing on who files them with the state.
Who owns the renewal on Bass business?
You do. The producer agreement says you own and control the expirations.
When is premium due?
25% plus fees and taxes at binding, and the balance less commission by the 10th of the month after the effective date.

Corrections
Vendors change their pricing all the time and they don't email us when they do. So if you see a price on here that's gone up, a plan Bass Underwriters quit selling or a contract term that reads different now, let us know and send the link to the page where Bass Underwriters has it. Somebody here pulls up that page and checks it before we change anything on ours.
