Amwins review for retail agents: programs, access and binding authority
Amwins places hard-to-write and specialty business for retail agencies. Its brokers shop the open market, its underwriting companies run class programs with their own authority and Amwins Access handles small accounts, partly online through Amwins IQ. Much of this is surplus lines, or E&S, written by carriers that aren't licensed in your state.
It suits commercial agencies with steady specialty business. You need an Amwins appointment before you send anything.
- Best for
- Commercial agencies that want open-market brokerage, class programs and online small-account quotes under one appointment
- Type
- Wholesale broker and MGA, with an online platform for small accounts
- Lines
- Commercial P&C, professional lines, transportation, marine, personal lines and flood
- Access
- Appointment required. The producer agreement asks for $1 million of E&O
- Authority
- Underwriting programs and Amwins Access bind in house. Brokerage binds once the carrier agrees
- States
- Nationwide, with a few state gaps on Amwins IQ instant quotes
Our take
Amwins is one of the big national wholesalers, with more than 8,200 people in about 150 locations. One appointment opens three doors: brokers who shop the open market, more than 150 class programs that bind in house and a small-account team with online quoting.
It fits a commercial agency that sends wholesale business every week, from a contractor with losses to a small restaurant that needs a quick quote. Agencies that only place a few surplus lines risks a year may find the paperwork heavy for the volume.
Read the billing terms first. You owe Amwins the premium less your commission even when the insured hasn't paid you, and surplus lines taxes default to your agency.

How to submit
- How it works
- Brokerage and program accounts go to the Amwins broker or underwriter for that class. Small accounts that fit Amwins IQ can be quoted and bound online
- Submit by
- Your Amwins broker or underwriter, or Amwins IQ online. Admitted placements go through MyAgency, and carrier portals through Direct Access
- Documents needed
- The application each market or program asks for, with supplements and current loss runs where a program wants them. At binding, your bind request and any finance agreement
Quote and bind authority
"Takes your submission" means you send the risk to the firm, and "Underwrites" means its own staff set the terms. Binds "In house" means the firm commits the carrier on its own, with no second sign-off. Where a cell is blank, the firm publishes nothing on that step.
| Program | Takes your submission | Quotes | Underwrites | Binds | Issues the policy |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Amwins Brokerage | Carrier sets terms | After carrier OK | |||
| Amwins Underwriting | In house | ||||
| Amwins Access | In house |
| What you send | Response time Amwins gives |
|---|---|
| Amwins IQ quote on an eligible risk | Within minutes |
| Amwins IQ personal lines risk sent to an underwriter | Within 48 hours |
| Amwins IQ login for a new or unmatched agent | 1 to 2 business days |
| Direct Access inquiry | Within 48 hours |
Your producer agreement gives you no power to bind or issue coverage for Amwins. Binding sits with the carrier or with the Amwins program that holds the authority.
Carrier paper and admitted status
- Admitted or surplus lines
- Both, in Brokerage, Underwriting and Access
- Whose paper
- Set by each quote or program. Amwins names no single carrier for any of the three
- Direct Access carriers
- More than 40 admitted P&C carriers
Commission, fees and billing
- Commission
- Amwins publishes no commission rate for brokerage or programs
- Direct Access commission
- On admitted carrier codes through Direct Access, members keep 100% of the carrier commission and can share in profits from the first dollar
- Who bills
- Agency bill. You owe Amwins the premium, fees and taxes less your commission, even if the insured hasn't paid you
- Payment terms
- Due on the date the bill shows, or by the 20th day after the policy or change takes effect
- Premium finance
- Financing doesn't change what you owe. If the policy cancels, Amwins sends returned premium and its own unearned commission to the finance company
- Service fees
- Fully earned once coverage is bound. Amwins may also add a broker fee, its own charge to the client on top of the premium
- If Amwins collects
- You give up commission for the term on any account Amwins has to collect from directly
- Carrier pay to Amwins
- Amwins can earn contingent and supplemental commission from carriers based on profit, volume or growth
Surplus lines taxes and filings
- Who files
- It depends on the Amwins office and the state. The producer agreement puts it on you unless Amwins agrees in writing to do it
- Taxes and stamping fees
- You collect them and pay them to Amwins or the state, unless you agree otherwise in writing
- Diligent search
- State forms and compliance steps fall to you unless Amwins takes them on in writing
Endorsements, audits and claims
- Endorsements
- Request changes on Amwins IQ personal lines policies in the portal. Everything else goes through your Amwins broker or underwriter
- Certificates
- You prepare them. Amwins doesn't check them and takes no responsibility for them
- Cancellations
- Flat cancellation only where the carrier allows it. Short-rate penalties can apply
- Audits
- Handled by the broker of record, along with any return commission
- Renewals
- Amwins doesn't have to warn you before a policy expires. Amwins IQ personal lines emails renewal quotes 30 to 45 days ahead
- Claims handled by
- The carrier, under the policy. Amwins Brokerage casualty has claim advocates who help with coverage and payment disputes
Who owns the account
- Who owns the client
- You do, as long as you pay what you owe. Admitted Placement Services says agencies keep 100% of their book
- Renewal control
- Yours while your account is current. If you fall behind, Amwins can use your expirations to collect the debt
- Broker of record
- A new broker of record takes over later audits, return premium and unearned commission
- If the relationship ends
- Either side can end the agreement with 90 days written notice. It ends at once if you lose your license or sell, merge or close the agency

Frequently asked questions
How do I get appointed with Amwins?
Request an appointment on its site and return the producer agreement, questionnaire and W-9 with proof of E&O and crime coverage. You can't submit business until Amwins approves you.
Can Amwins bind coverage itself?
Yes, on Underwriting programs and eligible Amwins Access risks. Open-market brokerage binds once the carrier agrees.
Who pays the surplus lines taxes on Amwins business?
Your agency, unless Amwins agrees in writing to take it on. It can vary by office and state.
Who owns the renewal?
You do while your account is current. Amwins can use your expirations only to collect money you owe it.
Is Direct Access the same as Amwins Access?
No. Amwins Access writes small accounts through Amwins. Direct Access is a network that gives independent agencies codes with admitted carriers.

Corrections
Vendors change their pricing all the time and they don't email us when they do. So if you see a price on here that's gone up, a plan Amwins quit selling or a contract term that reads different now, let us know and send the link to the page where Amwins has it. Somebody here pulls up that page and checks it before we change anything on ours.
